Estee Lauder Double Wear Nude Foundation

Happy New Year!!! I hope that you all welcomed the year in with a bang. I know that I certainly did.  I decided to skip last weeks post as it was a bit hectic for me but I have to get back into the swing of things at some point right? I am the queen of procrastination so this has been something that I have to admit that I have been putting off. Your girl would rather be watching some weird fantasy series ( my latest obsession has been The Magicians) than typing and editing.

On the other hand though -if my procrastination doesn’t get the better of me- I have so much planned for you guys which I can’t wait to share with you lovelies. So enough rambling lets get into the review itself.

Now as you know the original Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation found its way into many of our hearts and has become the absolute go to foundation for coverage and also staying power (Find my foundation collection here). The double wear nude released around September last year and at first I wasn’t too keen to get it. But after watching a few reviews I decided to give this baby a try.

A little bit about this product is that it is a very sheer coverage, weightless and thin, as it is a water based foundation. This foundation will give you a very luminous finish to the skin. If you want coverage this is not the foundation to use yet it can be built up to a medium coverage at most and the coverage will have to come from using concealers. Due to its luminosity I would say that this foundation is not for every skin type. A warning to my oily skin girls is to stay clear of this foundation because you will look like grease monkey from the moment you put it on. This foundation has an SPF 30 which is great as it will protect your skin from the sun. I also love the fact that it is really hydrating and has red fruit extract which provides your skin with anti oxidants. The shade range is pretty good boasting 20 shades with different tones.

My  personal thoughts on this foundation, I got shade matched for the colour Bronze (5W1) which is very different to my original Double Wear where the shade Rich Ginger (5N1)  was matched to my skin tone, this shade was a tad too dark for skin but it works better than Bronze so expect a different shade match between the two foundations. I find that Bronze is a hair too light for my skin but I can get away with as if I use a bronzer on the perimeter of my face or a darker powder to set my face.

I have combination to oily skin and I have found that this foundation needs to be set using a heavier or more full coverage powder so like a Mac Studio Fix Powder foundation or the Inglot pressed powders, especially in my T zone. Now if I want this foundation to last all day, then I have to bake it, a method that I have only used on this foundation as it is so sheer. I don’t normally bake but I feel on this foundation, it is necessary. I also find that I need to colour correct with this foundation as my darkness tends to show through making the foundation look ashy in some spots. So overall, a lot more work.

I have had this foundation for over a month so I have used it in as many ways as possible in order to try it out.  I have to say my favourite way of applying this foundation has to be with a brush since its so sheer, a brush adds more coverage and uses less product whereas a sponge absorbs more product and sheers it out further. Because this foundation is super sheer and also a smidge too light for me. I really liked mixing this foundation with other foundations. I like the way it sheers out a full coverage foundation into a natural finish and also mixes in beautifully so that it helps a darker foundation become my exact shade.

The verdict? This is a foundation that I feel would be great in the colder months where my skin is much dryer and not as oily. I also feel like the shade would suit me better in the winter as I tend to get lighter during the winter months whereas in Summer I get slightly tanned which will cause this foundation to look very ashy. I also feel that this foundation will look ridiculous on me during the hot, humid and downright sweaty Durban summers because its super luminous and sheer which will break down in the heat and I’ll end up looking like an oil slick.

Also lets talk about the price of this foundation, it is up there in price going at R585 a bottle for 30ml, it also doesn’t come with a pump which is very annoying and completely unsanitary. I feel like for that price, we as consumers deserve a pump, it should be mandatory for all companies at this point. Buying a pump through Estee will set you back R50 and through Mac it will cost R95 so either way you are paying over R600 which is not worth it at all. I actually say save your cash with this foundation, you can find something way better at the drugstore to be honest.
